Pre-runners came across a mother elk and her brand new babycalf. To avoid disturbing the animals we moved the finish line a little earlier. Here's a picture of the unsteady calf alongside her watchful mum.
I'm not sure. Jane took the photo. But the calf could barely walk and was hiding in the forest most of the time. The mum was trying to draw attention away by standing in another part of the forest when we first saw her. It was a very small area, which is why we stopped the race two controls early - and I think that is also how we got so close
