The Chase
Race Notes
The Chase is the second of the two-race combo 2013 Barebones Chase. It has an expected winning time of about 25 minutes in each category. Your time in the first race determines your start time in The Chase: the faster you finish in The Setup, the earlier you start in The Chase. The first across the line in The Chase in each category is crowned champion of the 2013 Barebones Chase.
Chasing starts create lots of head to head racing and are tons of fun. Be prepared - plan your strategy in advance. When running with your arch rival are you going to let him/her do the navigating and then drop them over the last couple of controls? Or are you going to try to break away from them earlier?
Ultra-Juniors, Super-Juniors, Juniors - will not run in a Chase. They will have a point to point course to run, which starts/finishes in the Finish arena.
WARNING 1: This area is used for disc-golf. Be courteous to disc-golfers and watch out for flying discs!
WARNING 2: There is a bike race taking place all day. Immediately before the finish you will cross over the bike race course, as it reaches the top of a climb. Watch out for cyclists.
WARNING 3: There are lots of other users in the park - always be alert for fast moving bikes and runners and discs.

Start times & Start area
If you had an elapsed time of under 30 minutes in The Setup then your start time is 12:00 plus your elapsed time in The Setup.
If you had an elapsed time of over 30 minutes in The Setup then you start at 12:00 noon in a mass-start.
We will try to get start lists printed in the Day Lodge, but it is your responsibility to get to the start on time.
You should be at the start at least 5 minutes before your start time in order to give the officials a chance to start you at the correct time.
There will be two start areas: "Start A" for Ultra-Juniors, Super-Juniors, Juniors, and Novice; "Start B" for all other categories.
Finish arena
The finish for all courses is in front of the waxing building near the biathlon stadium.
Terrain
Dense trail network close to the Canmore Nordic Center stadium. Lots of running in the forest.
The forest floor is generally soft.
Physically challenging, with plenty of climb and a mix of tough forest running along with fast trail runs.
Course Planner notes
Directions
Park at the Canmore Nordic Centre - carpooling is advised because parking will be very tight. Note that there are two other events taking place at the Nordic Centre on Saturday morning, so the parking lot will be very full.
We have access to Waxing room #16, and you can leave your bags/clothing in there. See the location map on the Home page of this website to find the waxing building.
Washrooms: in the waxing building, and also in the Day Lodge.
Safety
There are many, many other users of the Nordic Centre today, including the 5-Peaks running race and the Iron Maiden bike race and disc golfers. We have designed courses to avoid the main mountain bike tracks, but be aware especially when crossing or running along trails.

Course Planner notes
- Middle distance race, with as much route choice and technical challenges as I could dream up.
- The courses, in general, go downhill and then back up. Terrain is quite physical.
- Enjoy the pack-running, and be sure to check out the finish area before you start so that you are ready for the final head to head sprint against your rivals!
- Circles are larger than the ISOM/ISSOM specify. I find this helps you to read the map close to the control.
